Buying your first nucleus colony (or “nuc”) is an exciting milestone on your beekeeping journey. There’s nothing quite like opening a hive for the first time and seeing thousands of honeybees hard at work. However, before you rush off to buy a nucleus colony, there are a few important things to consider.
Do You Have Somewhere Suitable for Bees?
Before purchasing a nuc, you’ll need a suitable location for your hive. Ideally, this should be sheltered from strong winds, receive some sunlight during the day and have good access for inspections. You’ll also need to think about nearby neighbours, footpaths and livestock.
Have You Got Your Equipment Ready?
Your bees shouldn’t arrive before your hive is ready. At a minimum, you’ll need:
- A complete hive
- Protective clothing
- A smoker
- Hive tool
- Feeder
- Suitable stand or base
Having everything assembled beforehand will make transferring your nuc much less stressful.
Learn the Basics First
You don’t need to be an expert before buying bees, but having a basic understanding of bee biology, swarm prevention and seasonal management will make your first season far more enjoyable. Many new beekeepers attend a local beginners’ course or spend time with an experienced beekeeper before purchasing bees. Buy From a Reputable Supplier
Not all nucleus colonies are created equal. A good quality nuc should contain a healthy laying queen, brood at various stages, food stores and plenty of worker bees.
